How we estimate
carbon emissions

EcoRoute compares the climate impact of private rides and public transport using distance-based emission factors. These are estimates — not live vehicle telemetry — meant to help you understand trade-offs, not certify exact footprints.

What are carbon emissions?

Carbon emissions (often measured as CO₂ or CO₂-equivalent) are greenhouse gases released when we burn fuel. For transport, most emissions come from petrol and diesel combustion in engines, plus the electricity used to power trains and electric buses.

Transport is a major source of urban emissions in Jakarta. Even small shifts — taking KRL or TransJakarta once a week instead of a solo motorcycle trip — can add up across millions of commutes.

How EcoRoute calculates your trip

For each route we estimate road distance, then multiply by an emission factor (kilograms of CO₂ per kilometre):

Trip CO₂ = distance (km) × emission factor (kg/km)

🏍️ Motorcycle / ojek

0.120 kg/km

Typical small petrol motorcycle. Higher per-passenger emissions because one rider carries the full vehicle weight.

🚗 Car

0.192 kg/km

Average petrol car occupancy (~1.2 passengers in urban trips). Heavier vehicle, more fuel per kilometre.

🚆 Public transport

0.016 kg/km

Blended estimate for KRL, MRT, and TransJakarta — emissions spread across many passengers per vehicle.

Annual savings

When you set commutes per week, EcoRoute multiplies one-way savings by return trips and 48 working weeks:

Annual CO₂ saved = (private CO₂ − public CO₂) × trips per week × 2 × 48

What these numbers do not include

Why estimates still matter: Exact measurement needs fuel data and ridership counts. Distance-based factors are a practical way to compare options side by side — especially when time, cost, and emissions pull in different directions.

Sources & assumptions

Factors are aligned with common urban transport benchmarks (IPCC-style per-km ranges for motorcycles, cars, and mass transit). Public transport uses a conservative blended rate reflecting high passenger loads on Jakarta's KRL, MRT, and BRT corridors.

Fare estimates are separate from emissions and use published transit fares plus distance-based ojek/car heuristics. Connect live operator APIs for precise pricing.
